Five Ties Publishing

Established in 2005, Five Ties Publishing produces high-quality books on photography, fine art, architecture, film, and graphic design in collaboration with emerging and internationally renowned artists and writers. Five Ties founder Garrett White is the former director of publications at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Five Ties was begun from a passionate belief in the vital importance of artistic endeavor and in the enduring value of books as objects of pleasure and beauty. The Five Ties list is based in photography, and most titles generate or accompany museum and gallery exhibitions.

We believe that a great list—inspiring, challenging, informative, entertaining—can only be built from a strong vision and a willingness to take risks beyond the need for high volume and pre-established commercial appeal. The name Five Ties comes from an anecdote in Deirdre Bair’s award-winning 1978 biography of Samuel Beckett. After a period of intensive translation and editorial work for James Joyce on Finnegan’s Wake, Beckett went to Joyce’s home in Paris to deliver the manuscript. In need of money, Beckett perhaps expected some modest remuneration for his efforts. According to Bair, Joyce left Beckett for a moment and returned with five ties and old overcoat. That’s often what we get in our struggle for art—a few ties and an old overcoat. So it is. But then, who wouldn’t want those five ties?
